At Kahoot!, ensuring the online safety of our users is a responsibility we take incredibly seriously. To protect our community and our shared values, we constantly work to keep our platform safe and free from inappropriate content.
In this Safety Guide for Content, we’ll give you insight into how we work with platform safety at Kahoot!, including how we moderate content. For details about our platform content policies and acceptable use, please see our Editorial Guidelines, Terms and Conditions and Acceptable Use Policy. This Safety Guide for Content on Kahoot! forms an integral part of Kahoot!’s legal agreement with you. Kahoot! may update this Safety Guide for Content on Kahoot! from time to time to reflect updates in our safety measures for content or to otherwise comply with relevant legal requirements. Please review this guide for updated information on content regulation and moderation at Kahoot!.
Content on Kahoot!
Much of the content on the Kahoot! platform is user-generated content, created and uploaded by our community of users from around the world. In addition to user-generated content, the Kahoot! team and our verified creators also provide content on the platform. Our community benefits from a massive library of learning materials created by a wide range of diverse contributors.
Today, you will find more than 60 million public user-generated kahoots on our platform. These are kahoots that our users have created and made available to the public through the Kahoot! platform and app. There are also millions of private kahoots on the platform that are not available for the public.
We work hard every day to maintain a safe and playful community. Kahoot! is dedicated to protecting the integrity of our platform as a safe and fun environment that makes learning awesome for all of our users around the world.
How do we regulate content?
Along with this Safety Guide for Content, our Editorial Guidelines, Terms and Conditions, and Acceptable Use Policy regulate content and use of the Kahoot! platform. All users shall be familiar with these rules and comply with our standards for appropriate content.
Our Editorial Guidelines are designed to maintain the safety of the Kahoot! platform and ensure that it does not contain content that is harmful or illegal. The Editorial Guidelines apply to all contributors to the Kahoot! platform, including our verified creators and partners.
The Editorial Guidelines are based on Kahoot!’s core values: playful, curious and inclusive. These are the basis for the content that we want on our platform. Contributors to the Kahoot! platform and app shall respect our values and must not publish content that:
- Contains or encourages violence or criminal behavior,
- May threaten the safety of our users or that may encourage unsafe or harmful behavior,
- Is illegal, discriminating, clearly inappropriate, or objectionable, or
- Threatens the integrity and authenticity of our platform, including our kahoots, our users, and commercial content.
Please see our Editorial Guidelines for more information on the types of content we prohibit.
Additionally, users cannot publish or promote content that:
- Is illegal, threatening, defamatory, harassing, degrading, intimidating, fraudulent, deceptive, invasive, racist, or contains any type of suggestive, inappropriate, or explicit language,
- Infringes on any trademark, patent, trade secret, copyright, or other proprietary right of any party,
- Contains unauthorized or unsolicited advertising, or
- Impersonates any person or entity, including any Kahoot! employees or representatives.
The content regulations also apply to the nicknames that users provide to participate in a kahoot. Users shall not use nicknames that are inappropriate or offensive or that breach our rules for acceptable content.
User responsibility
We are committed to maintaining Kahoot as a safe online environment for learning and information sharing. Users are accountable for the content they post on the Kahoot! platform and its usage. We advise our users to thoroughly review any kahoots available on our platform before they are played.
How do we make sure that the content on Kahoot! is safe?
General
When a member of the public makes us aware of illegal content on our services, or we become aware of such content another way, we act to remove it. We have implemented a range of moderation efforts to help us keep content safe, described in detail below.
Content review and user suspension
Kahoot! reserves the right to review, monitor, edit, or remove user content at our sole discretion. We may remove or disable access to any user content that breaches our policies, values, or standards, and we also have the right to suspend or disqualify user accounts who do not respect our rules.
We also reserve the right to suspend or remove contributors, including verified creators, whose profiles do not comply with our values or that contain content in breach of our Editorial Guidelines.
When assessing violations, we consider the frequency of the misconduct, the severity of the harm caused, the intent behind the actions, and any past warnings issued.
Upon proceeding with any removal or suspension, Kahoot! will attempt to notify the violator and provide them with reasonable guidance on how to lift such consequences. This information may include a reference to these guidelines. If the violator verbally abuses or threatens our staff, we may block any future communication with them and, any such blocking may be permanent. Kahoot! reserves the right to suspend users that post manifestly illegal content without prior warning.
Moderation
Kahoot! has a team of qualified moderators whose bespoke role is to review and filter out inappropriate content. This team undergoes training on how to recognize harmful content and the appropriate actions to take based on the nature of the content. For instance, when moderators evaluate content flagged as inappropriate, they assess whether the labeling is justified and assess the severity of the content in question. The severity of the illegality of the content will influence the resulting consequence for the user or content. This team is provided with guides and coaching on what content to remove from public access and how to do so.
As part of our content moderation process, we use a software to flag or quarantine public content. This software utilizes an automated system to screen content uploaded to the Kahoot! platform, moderating content according to Kahoot!’s chosen standards. Depending on the type of harmful content identified, the software will either immediately quarantine content or flag it. Trained moderators review flagged and quarantined content within a short time to ensure that only inappropriate material violating Kahoot!’s Terms and Conditions, is restricted. We continuously work to improve this moderation method to reflect the content and use of the Kahoot! platform.
Flagging
We rely on our community to help us keep the platform safe. We encourage users to report illegal or inappropriate content. Any adult account holder can flag individual public kahoots for review, should they deem the kahoot to include illegal or inappropriate content. Content flagged by our users will be reviewed and assessed by our moderator team.
To all end users, we ask that if you see a kahoot that features illegal content or which otherwise violates our Terms and Conditions, you flag it to our team of moderators. Instructions on how to flag inappropriate content are set out below in this section.
Upon receiving a report, our moderators will review the kahoot, normally within 24 hours. If a moderator agrees that the kahoot violates our Terms and Conditions, the kahoot will be quarantined and the creator notified. The kahoot will no longer be available to the public but the creator will be able to edit it. If the creator modifies the kahoot to a version our moderators conclude is appropriate, the kahoot will be approved for public access. If a moderator does not find that the flagged kahoot violates our terms to begin with, the kahoot will be approved for public access.
This is how you flag inappropriate content:
Step 1: Click the three dots next to the title of the kahoot and click on “Flag kahoot”:
Step 2: Explain why you find it inappropriate and click “Flag”:
Step 3: The kahoot is immediately flagged as “under moderation.” Our moderation team will evaluate the kahoot and it will either be quarantined, made private, or whitelisted. You can recognize that a kahoot is under moderation by the red strip displayed on top of the page:
Once a kahoot is approved, it cannot be flagged again by an end user unless the creator makes changes to the kahoot. If changed, the flagging opportunity is reopened.
Customer service response
If any user finds content that they believe is inappropriate and in breach of our terms and conditions and acceptable use policy and flagging is not available, please reach out to our customer service team via our Customer Support contact form.
Nickname generator
The host of a kahoot may disable the opportunity for participants to create nicknames by activating our nickname generator. We recommend that this is done if Kahoot! is used in an environment where nicknames can be used to cause harm, for example with a vulnerable audience. Activating the nickname generator is a safe way to avoid inappropriate nicknames. With the nickname generator, a friendly nickname is suggested to the player instead of them creating their own nickname. See here to learn more about the nickname generation and the other ways to keep nicknames safe.
If you don’t want to use the nickname generator, anyone hosting a kahoot can kick out participants when they use an inappropriate nickname. In the kahoot lobby, just hover over the nickname so it’s crossed out and click to remove the name. Learn more.
Two-step join
If you are experiencing bot players entering your kahoot, the two-step join is a good way to address this. Anything that complicates the ability to join will make it less likely bots are able to do so. You can read more about the two-step join here.
Lock game
During a live session, a padlock-looking icon will be onscreen. You can toggle the onscreen lock to prevent additional participants (or bots) from joining. If you want to identify a participant who got an inappropriate nickname passed our profanity filter, you can lock your game, click the offending name to disconnect that participant, and then look at participant device screens to see who is disconnected.
Player Identifier
Certain subscriptions allow hosts to enable our Player Identifier tool. Identifiers are not displayed during live sessions and assignments. However, they will exist in reports. If someone joined with an inappropriate nickname and answered at least one question, the host can find their identifier on that session’s report. If someone attempts to target the host’s session with bots, this added layer of complexity to joining will reduce likelihood bots can join.
Profanity filtering of text responses
Certain subscriptions allow creators to add question types that let participants type a response instead of choosing from pre-determined options. When a kahoot is presented, typed responses from participants are scanned by a keyword profanity filter and will have known profane words removed if the question type leads to responses being displayed to other participants during the session.
Minimizing the length of time that particular illegal content is present on our service
In order to ensure particularly harmful illegal content is caught and removed quickly and effectively, we have specific processes and procedures in place to pick up such content, including automated moderation specifically aimed at these types of illegal content. This applies to terrorism content, child sexual exploitation and abuse content and other priority illegal content (i.e. content that falls within the categories of Schedule 5 through 7 of the Online Safety Act 2023).
Verified Creators
On the Kahoot! platform and app, you can find content from verified creators, including content partners.
When our users apply to become a verified creator, their profile and content is evaluated by the Kahoot! team. This includes checking alignment with Kahoot!’s Terms and Conditions, Acceptable Use Policy, and Editorial Guidelines. We also assess the overall accuracy and quality of the profile. When a user is verified as a Kahoot! verified creator, their content is marked with a red checkmark:
In addition to this, the verified creator gets access to a unique, verified profile where other users can discover high-quality content that the verified creator has created. Users may also connect with the verified creator via the community features. NB: Community features are not available to young users due to children’s privacy regulations.
The verification of users makes it easier to discover high-quality content on Kahoot!. However, it is not a guarantee that inappropriate content and irregularities may not appear. Therefore, verified content follows the same rules and guidelines as any other user-generated content on Kahoot! and can be moderated and flagged following the same processes.
If a verified creator publishes content that breaches our policies or guidelines, their status as a verified creator may be revoked and they may be excluded from Kahoot! in the same way as any other user. This applies to all verified creators, no matter what user type they are, ranging from student, social user, teacher, business user, or content partner.

Misuse of Complaint Systems
To maintain the integrity and effectiveness of our notice and complaint mechanisms, we expect all users to submit concerns in good faith.
Users or entities who frequently submit complaints or notices that are manifestly unfounded may have their ability to submit further complaints or notices suspended. Repeated misuse of the complaint systems may result in account suspension.
When deciding on a suspension, we will take into account factors such as the number and proportion of unfounded complaints, the seriousness of the misuse and its consequences, and, where possible, whether the misuse appears to be ill-intentioned towards a specific user or user group. Before any suspension is applied, we will issue a prior warning.
